What is UPI Tap & Pay?

UPI Tap & Pay was launched in September’23. Tap & Pay is an additional mode of UPI payment similar to Scan and Pay, Pay to Contacts, etc.

How Tap & Pay is different from Scan and Pay?

In Scan & Pay, you scan the receiver's QR with your camera to grab their UPI ID/VPA.

Now, enter Tap & Pay – instead of scanning, you tap your device on the receiver's device to fetch their UPI ID/VPA through NFC. It's that simple! Two ways to pay.

What is the transaction limit for Tap & Pay?

The same existing limits of UPI are applicable for Tap & Pay modes of payment.

Is there any device dependency for Using Tap & Pay?

The customer’s device should have NFC capability for using Tap & Pay mode of payment.

Can UPI Tap & Pay work without the Internet?

Your device needs the internet to complete the transaction. So, keep that connection flowing for a smooth Tap & Pay experience.

UPI Tap & Pay will be available for Android and iOS.

UPI Tap & Pay is available for Android as well as IOS mobile devices.

How is the UPI Tap & Pay enabled for the customer?

Tap & Pay mode will be by default enabled for the customers.

Is it mandatory for the customer to enable LITE X for completing transactions via Tap & Pay mode?

No, customers can perform Tap & Pay transactions even without UPI LITE or LITE X.

How will a customer disable Tap & Pay mode?

Disabling the Tap & Pay mode option is not available for the customers, just like Scan and Pay, Pay to Contacts, etc.

Does any loading of money in the wallet required to use Tap & Pay mode?

Loading of money is not mandatory for the Tap & Pay mode of payment.

From where the amount is debited for the payer in the case of Tap & Pay?

Here's the brief layout on Tap & Pay debits:

If your transaction is under ₹500 and you have enabled UPI LITE, consider it done – your LITE balance foots the bill without the need for a PIN.

Not on UPI LITE? No worries, your regular bank account will be sufficient, and a simple PIN ensures the transaction sails through.

Can payment be made using UPI Smart Tags?

UPI smart tags with NFC are only for receiving payments. It cannot be used for sending the payment.

At which places Tap & Pay transactions can be performed?

Tap & Pay transactions can be performed on NFC smart QRs/ NFC QR soundboxes or UPI smart tags with NFC.

How does a customer make a Tap & Pay transaction?

Ready to Tap & Pay? First, open your app.

Next, hit the Tap & Pay icon and enter the amount. Now, for the last aspect– tap on the Payee's QR, soundbox, or UPI Tag.

Voila! Your app confirms the success, and you're good to go.

How Tap & Pay transactions work?

The UPI ID/VPA of the receiver is written inside the NFC tags in QRs/soundboxes or UPI Smart Tags.

When the Payer taps his/her phone on NFC-enabled QRs/soundbox, the UPI ID of the receiver is fetched by the payer APP. The payer APP then initiates the transaction.

Tap & Pay is interoperable?

Yes, Customer can Tap on any NFC-enabled QRs/soundboxes or UPI smart tags using any APP (live on Tap & Pay functionality) to complete the payment.

Tap & Pay transactions can be called offline transactions?

Tap & Pay: Always Online!

Tap & Pay transactions can only be performed in online mode.

What is the identifier for Tap & Pay transactions?

Initiation mode 06 is the identifier for Tap & Pay transactions.

What will be the limits associated with this Tap & Pay mode?
  • If the transaction is through a LITE account, then the maximum limit is ₹500
  • If the transaction is through a bank account, then the existing UPI limit.
Will Tap & Pay transactions be applicable for International transactions

If acceptance infrastructure is available, then Tap & Pay transactions can be done in the international market as well.

How many transactions can be performed by a user through Tap & Pay?

Existing UPI limits for P2P and P2M are applicable for the Tap & Pay mode of payment.

Which type of transactions (P2P/P2M) can be performed using Tap & Pay?

Both P2P as well as P2M transactions can be performed using Tap & Pay mode of payment.

During the transaction where will debit and credit happen for the Payer and Payee?

Debit to payer LITE account or bank account (depending on the payment instrument selected by the customer); credit will be to the payee/merchant's bank account.

What is the range for Tap & Pay transactions?

The user has to tap his/her device or bring his device in the 5cm range of the UPI smart QR with NFC tag to fetch the UPI ID/VPA of the receiver.
